The city of Veraval is the headquarters of the district of Gir Somnath, Gujarat. This beautiful place is positioned at about 6 kilometers from the renowned Somnath Temple in Saurashtra. Veraval is mainly famous for fisheries and it is the major industry in the city which is governed by the fisherfolk known as “Kharwas”. The city is also well-known for building boats.  Here trawlers and traditional boats are used for fishing. The seafood industry in Veraval is also in a very booming stage and there are a number of factories which export fresh and excellent quality seafood to Europe, Japan, USA, Persian Gulf countries and to Southeast Asia.

Veraval also houses the Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited which is considered to be one of the biggest companies of India famous for the manufacture of rayon. Apart from this, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, Indian Rayon Nuvo Limited, Gujarat Heavy Chemicals ltd. and Gujarat Siddhee Cement limited are several other companies located about Veraval which are a source of employment to the youth of the city.

History of Veraval

The Veraval city was established in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. Rao Veravalji Vadher was the founder of Veraval who was a Rajput. Earlier Veraval was a part of the Junagarh Kingdom. It used to be a fortified town and was the dwelling of Junagarh’s royal family. Geography and Climate of Veraval

Veraval is geographically located at 20.9° in North and 70.37° in the East. The city has an average elevation of zero meters or zero feet.

Summers in Veraval are extremely harsh and it makes quite difficult for the tourists to cope with during this season. In monsoon time Veraval receives a considerable amount of rainfall. This is the best time to visit Veraval. The winter months are pleasant and chill.

Culture of Verawal

Veraval is majorly occupied with the “Gujaratis”. The “Kolis” and “Kharwas” are prevalent among the “Gujaratis”.  Apart from these there is a considerable population which encompasses the Rajwadi bhoi’s, Raykas, Turks, Patnis, Lohanas, Memons and Maleks. The main rail station of Veraval city is the Veraval Railway Station and it can be easily reached from Rajkot, Ujjain, Ahmadabad, Vadodara, Ratlam, Pune, Mumbai, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Trivandrum and other cities of Gujarat. There is no airport within the Veraval city; however the nearest airport which is the “Diu Airport” is located 90 kms away from Veraval. From here you can avail flights to reach the other cities of India.
